Svalbard polar bear day tour or a voyage at sea?
A day out from Longyearbyen fits a short trip, while an expedition ship reaches the drift ice. Here is what each really offers, what a day costs, and why neither can promise a bear.

The short version
What a Svalbard polar bear day tour really is
Search for a Svalbard polar bear day tour and you will find snowmobile trips, boat days and wildlife walks that leave Longyearbyen in the morning and come back the same evening. None of them is a bear hunt with a camera. Visit Svalbard, the archipelago's tourist board, states that there are no organised tours on Svalbard aimed at seeking out polar bears, and that trips sold as bear safaris in other parts of the Arctic do not exist there.1
What a day tour gives you instead is a long day in polar bear country with people who know it. Guides who lead tours outside the town limits of Longyearbyen always bring the required polar bear protection equipment.5 Visit Svalbard also advises visitors not to leave the settlements without a professional guide from a local activity provider.6 A bear may turn up on any of these days, or on none of them, and the tourist board says plainly that the chance simply cannot be predicted.2
This site books a winter version: a snowmobile day from Longyearbyen into Reindalen and towards Van Mijenfjorden with the local operator Arctic Footsteps, in a group of at most 10 people, for 8 hours, from $718 per person. The listing has no reviews yet, and as a snowmobile trip it depends on snow and ice. You can drive your own snowmobile or share one with a friend, and a valid driving licence is needed to drive.

Day tours from Longyearbyen, on snow and on water
In winter and spring the land itself becomes the road. Snowmobiles carry you over frozen valleys and fjord ice, and there are shorter options than a full day. An ice cave trip by snowmobile lasts 3.5 hours and starts from $476. A longer snowmobile day with an ice cave runs 7 hours and starts from $686. Svalbard's Sunny Winter season, as Visit Svalbard defines it, lasts from 1 March to 16 May.8
Later in the year the boats take over. Visit Svalbard's polar summer stretches from mid-May to late September.10 A 6-hour Arctic boat trip with a glacier stop and wildlife viewing starts from $378 and is rated 4.40 from 21 reviews. A 9-hour boat day to the Soviet ghost town of Pyramiden starts from $503 and is rated 4.58 from 40 reviews.11 Both run in small groups with pickup in town.
Wildlife walks are the third kind of day. A 5-hour wildlife safari with slow hiking and photography, rated 4.65 from 49 reviews, starts from $249. These walks look for reindeer, Arctic foxes and birds on the tundra near town, and their guides carry the same protection as every guided group outside the settlement.5 A bear on such a day would be luck rather than the plan, and a good guide will tell you that before you set off.

What a polar bear cruise in Svalbard adds
A polar bear cruise in Svalbard sails for days along the coast and towards the drift ice, far beyond the reach of a day boat from Longyearbyen. Polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting, moving, mating and sometimes resting.12 They also roam. About 300 bears stay on Svalbard all year, while others move between the archipelago and Franz Josef Land.13 A ship gives you days in the kind of habitat where bears spend their lives, rather than hours.
The rules travel with the ship. The polar bear provisions of Svalbard's environmental law apply in drift ice, on ice floes and in the water, as well as on land.14 Since 1 January 2025 everyone must keep at least 300 meters from a polar bear.3 From 1 March to 30 June the minimum distance is 500 meters.4 A bear seen from a cruise deck is a bear seen from far away, through binoculars and long lenses, and a responsible crew will turn away rather than close in.
A cruise is a different kind of trip altogether, measured in days rather than hours, and fares vary with the ship, the cabin and the season. Ask each cruise line what its route covers, how long it spends near the ice and how it handles a sighting. It is worth noting that Visit Svalbard avoids close-up images of polar bears in its own marketing.15 That is a good guide to expectations as well: a respectful sighting is a distant one, and any photo you take will look like it.

Is there a polar bear safari in Svalbard?
The phrase polar bear safari in Svalbard turns up in search results and tour titles, but the tourist board is clear that trips aimed at seeking out polar bears do not exist on Svalbard.1 The law sets the frame for every trip. The Svalbard Environmental Act establishes a general prohibition against unnecessarily disturbing, attracting or pursuing polar bears.21 A guide who spots a bear keeps the group away from it, whatever the itinerary says.
The tour this site books carries the words polar bear kingdom in its title, a name for the remote country it heads into. Read that as a description of the landscape, not as a promise. Like any trip on Svalbard, it cannot guarantee a sighting, and whether you see a bear cannot be predicted.2 What you can count on is a full day on a snowmobile in a wild and very quiet part of Spitsbergen, with a guide who knows the terrain and the rules.
If a bear is the whole point of your journey, think in probabilities rather than bookings. The polar bear population of the Svalbard and Barents Sea region is estimated at around 3,000 bears.22 On Svalbard itself the number varies through the year, with a likely maximum of fewer than a thousand.23 Time spent near the ice, long days in the field and plain luck all play their part, and none of them can be bought as a certainty.
How to choose between a day out and a voyage
Start with the calendar. A day tour fits into a few days in Longyearbyen, a town of around 2,100 people.16 Winter days use snowmobiles over snow and fjord ice, while summer days use boats. Motorized traffic on the sea ice of selected fjords is banned after 1 March, and winter routes follow those rules.24 An expedition cruise, by contrast, asks for a week or more of your holiday and a booking well ahead of the season.
Think about the cold as well. In March the average daily high at Svalbard Airport is -8.8 °C and the average low is -15.5 °C.25 By July the average high reaches 9.4 °C.25 The listing for the snowmobile day asks you to bring warm clothing, snow clothing and winter sports gear, and layers of wool under your outer clothes make a long day on the snow far more comfortable. On a boat in summer, wind and spray matter more than frost.
Then decide how much the bear matters. If any sighting at all would make your trip, a long voyage near the ice gives you more hours in bear habitat. If you want a guided day in the wild country around Longyearbyen, with frozen valleys, reindeer and huge views, a day tour does that well, and the snowmobile day this site books is a trip of exactly that kind. On a longer stay you can also combine a winter day out with a summer voyage on a second trip.
Booking the winter day on a snowmobile
The snowmobile day booked through this site includes pickup from your accommodation, a safety briefing, the snowmobile ride and a local guide, with live guiding in English, Italian and Spanish. You can drive your own snowmobile or share one with a friend, and no previous snowmobile experience is needed. To drive you need a valid driving licence, and drivers must be at least 18 years old.
The trip is not suitable for children under 14, pregnant women, people with back problems or people with limited mobility, and the operator can change the planned route for weather, snow and ice. That flexibility is part of travelling safely in the Arctic: a guide who turns back from bad ice or poor visibility is doing the job well, and the day still gives you hours on the snow far from town.
Payment can wait until after you book, and cancelling is free until 24 hours ahead of departure. The listing is new and has no reviews yet, which makes it worth reading its details on GetYourGuide carefully and asking any questions before you book. If you travel in summer, when snowmobiles are off the menu, look at the boat days to Pyramiden or along the fjords instead, or at the wildlife walks that start close to town.

You ask,we answer.
Can I see polar bears on a day tour from Longyearbyen?
Possibly, but nobody can promise it. Visit Svalbard says the chance of seeing a bear simply cannot be predicted.2
Are there polar bear safaris in Svalbard?
No. Visit Svalbard states that no organised tours on Svalbard aim to seek out polar bears.1
Is a cruise better for seeing bears?
It gives you more time near the ice. Bears depend on sea ice for hunting, moving and mating, and a ship can spend days near it.12
How close can a boat get to a bear?
No closer than 300 meters. The minimum distance is 300 meters, and 500 meters from 1 March to 30 June.34
What does the snowmobile day cost?
From $718 per person. The 8-hour trip includes pickup, a safety briefing, the snowmobile and a guide.
Do I need a licence for the snowmobile?
Yes, if you drive. A valid driving licence is needed to drive, and drivers must be 18 or over. Passengers can share a snowmobile.
Can I go out alone instead?
Visit Svalbard advises against it. It recommends leaving the settlements only with a professional guide from a local activity provider.6
